Key terms used in political science about elections and voting
| Term | Definition |

| Polling Place | The place where the voters who live in a certain precinct go to vote. |
| Political Party | A group of persons who seek to control government through the winning of elections. |
| Registration | A procedure of voter identification intended to prevent fraudulent voting. |
| Independent | A term used to describe people who have no party affiliation. |
| Bipartisan | Supported by two parties. |
| Suffrage | The right to vote. |
| Ballot | The device voters use to register a choice in an election. |
| Splinter Parties | Parties that have split away from one of the major parties. |
| Nomination | The process of candidate selection in an electoral system. |
| Ward | A unit into which cities are often divided for the election of city council members. |
| Absentee Ballot | A ballot cast by a voter other than in-person on election day. Some jurisdictions use the term synonymous with mailed ballots while other jurisdictions use the term synonymous with early voting. |
| Audio Ballot | A ballot in which a set of offices is presented to the voter in spoken form. |
| Straw Poll | An ad hoc or unofficial vote. It is used to show the popular opinion on a certain matter. |
| Sample Official Ballot | An official example ballot provided to voters with information specific to the voter. |
| Run-Off | Election to select a winner following a primary or a general election in which no candidate in the contest received the required minimum percentage of the votes cast. |
| Registration Form | An official sworn statement of information used to register to vote by voters. This is sometimes referred to as a Voter Registration Card. |
| Recall Process | Process that allows voters to remove elected representatives from office prior to the expiration of their terms of office. |
