| AC | acro. alternating current, as in "110 volts AC" -- the stuff in the wall, also any variation of current, as in 'noise' |
| add | v. put in |
| adjust | v. to change a controlling value, usually to make a device work to specification |
| align | v. to make straight or parallel, as in - to align a laser beam with its case |
| aluminum | n. a light metal found in much of the Earth's crust |
| amp | n. ampere, unit of current, see 'current' |
| anodized | adj. treated with an electrochemical process to form an inert coating on a metal |
| archive | n, v. an area or folder for keeping old documentation |
| assembly | n. a collection of parts joined together in a specific way |
| attach | v. connect, secure, fasten, plug in |
| base number | n. here, the unique number assigned to a part in our libraries, and in inventory. |
| BOM | acro. Bill Of Materials - a list of parts in an assembly or product |
| burn | v, n. apply too much heat, apply fire to |
| capacitor | n. a device that stores small amounts of electric charge, passes AC but not DC |
| chip | n. an 'IC' |
| class | n. a defined group |
| class code | n. here, the number preceding a base which says the general type part referred to |
| class-base | n. a part numbering protocol used here for electronic parts, together they make a whole part number ('PN') |
| clean | v. remove dirt |
| component | n. a part that can be bought or made |
| computer | n. evil device for torturing the non-technical among us :o) |
| current | n. flow of electricity, like a river |
| curve | n. a portion of a rounded figure, also a graph of an algebraic function, as in 'learning curve' |
| cut | v. sever, break apart |
| DC | acro. direct current (hopefully with no 'noise') |
| difference | n. that part of one item not in another, and vice versa |
| diode | n. electronic version of a check valve, lets electrons flow in one direction but not in the other (almost) |
| discrete | adj. separate, separatable, also an individual electronic component, as opposed to an IC |
| divide | v, n. to separate into two or more pieces |
| document | n. a book or small text describing a process, product, or sub-assembly |
| documentation | n. document, the process of describing a process, product, or sub-assembly |
| dry | v. remove water, alcohol, etc. |
| edit | v. reduce to essentials, improve the form |
| electric | adj. the process of using electricity to do a job, usually with a large amount of current, or a device that does that |
| electricity | n. a flow (or potential) of electrons available for doing work |
| electronic | adj. the process of using electricity to do a job, usually with a small amount of current, or a device that does that |
| enhance | v. improve, often by adding features |
| filter | n, v. a device that lets some waves or particles pass while blocking others |
| fire | n, v. burning stuff, fast exothermic oxidation process |
| flux | n. an aggressive fluid or paste that cleans surfaces to be soldered, also a general term for 'flow' |
| flux residue | n. the gunk left behind by soldering which must be cleaned off the PCA, sometimes called "varnish" |
| form | n, v. shape |
| grommet | n. usually a rubber ring fit into a hole to protect and seal a wire passing through |
| IC | acro. an integrated circuit, a number of discrete components shrunk onto a single piece of silicon and sold as a unit |
| inductor | n. coil, electronic version of a tubine attached to a flywheel, passes DC but resists AC |
| information | n. message |
| insulate | v. to create a protective barrier,or coating, for electical or thermal separation |
| insulation | n. material used to isolate wires from other conductive components, usually made of PVC or Teflon |
| invert | v. turn over, flip top to bottom |
| isolate | v. to insulate, separate, set aside by itself |
| join | v. to connect, put together |
| joint | n. a connection, as in 'solder joint' |
| knife | n. here, usually, an 'Exacto' blade on a handle for cutting or scraping |
| knob | n. a handle on a rotary switch or pot, usually round |
| label | n, v. a printed piece of paper, plastic, or metal applied to a device to convey information about it |
| LASER | acro. Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, a coherent light source (such as we make) |
| lead | n. heavy soft metal, alloyed with tin for use in solder |
| LED | acro. light emitting diode |
| liquid | n, adj. a material with a changing shape |
| modify | v. change |
| monitor | n, v. display for a computer |
| optical | adj. related to seeing, the use of light, devices which use or condition light, such as lenses |
| O-ring | n. a rubber ring compressed into position for sealing purposes |
| parallel | adj. the state of two lines in the same plane which never cross, aligned |
| part | n. one of many pieces in a whole assembly or product |
| PCA | acro. Printed Circuit Assembly |
| PCB | acro. Printed Circuit Board |
| pliers | n. a tool for grabbing things |
| PN | acro. part number |
| position | n, v. location |
| pot | n. shorthand for 'potentiometer' - a coil of wire with a rotary tap, a variable resistor |
| potential | n, adj. possibility, difference, pressure, capabiliity |
| PVC | acro. poly-vinyl-chloride, a plastic not allowed as insulation in most products here |
| ratio | n. proportion or fraction, expressed as two numbers joined by a colon as in '2:3', said as "2 to 3" |
| read | v. look at printed words and understand them |
| remove | v. take away |
| residue | n. material left behind by a process, often undesired |
| resistor | n. electronic version of a thin pipe or small hole, resists current, retains voltage |
| rev | n, v. revision |
| rinse | v. clean with water, or other solvent liquid |
| scrape | v. to shave something off a surface |
| screwdriver | n. a tool for turning screws |
| separate | v, n. to move apart, to distinguish, to put a barrier between |
| signal | n. desired variation in current, a.k.a. 'information' |
| SN | acro. serial number |
| solder | v. heat and apply tin/lead |
| soldering iron | n. a heating tool for joining metals with, usually, tin/lead solder |
| solid | n, adj. a material with a static shape |
| spec | n. specification, a concise document describing the performance of a product |
| specific | adj. particular, exact, definite |
| specification | n. see 'spec' |
| straight | adj. not bent or curved, as in 'straight as an arrow' |
| sub-assembly | n. an assembly within a larger assembly or product, usually comes with its own BOM |
| Teflon | n. a trade name for poly-tetra-flouro-ethylene (PTFE), a tough slippery plastic used for wire insulation here |
| test | v. to exercise a device, in order to prove that it works correctly, or to change it so it does, or to discard it if not |
| text | n. words on a page or screen |
| tin | n. a metal, or - to wet with solder |
| trace | n, v. an electrical connection on a PCB, a waveform on an oscilloscope |
| transistor | n. gate or amplifier, like a water valve where 'E' is the input, 'C' is the output, and 'B' is the valve handle. |
| trim | v. cut to size |
| version | n. a variation of a design or document (or story) |
| via | n. a plated hole in a PCB to join traces on separate layers |
| vice versa | n. the reverse case, or opposite position (a Latin phrase used in English) |
| volt | n. unit of electrical potential, see 'voltage' |
| voltage | n. electric potential, difference of charge between one point and another, like water behind a dam |
| watt | n. unit of electrical power, or here also- of light power |
| wet | adj, v. covered with liquid |
| wire | n. long strand of soft metal, usually copper, mostly used to conduct electricity, but sometimes used in packaging |
| wire stripper | n. a tool for removing insulation from a wire |
