VanNortwick - The Sentence and Its Parts

Vocabulary WordDefinition
Sentence Group of words that expresses a complete thought
Complete Subject Includes all of the words that tell whom or what the sentence is about
Complete Predicate Includes the verb and all the words that tell what the subject is or what the subject does
Simple Subject The main word or words in the complete subject
Proper Name Rule If a proper name is used as the subject, all parts of the name make up the simple subject
Simple Predicate Or verb/The main word or words that make up the complete predicate
Verbs Words used to express an action, condition, or state of being
Linking Verbs Tell what the subject is
Action Verbs Tell what the subject does
Verb Phrase Made up of a main verb and one or more helping verbs
Main Verb Can stand alone as the simple predicate of a sentence
Helping Verb Help the main verb to express action or show time
Compound Subject Made up of two or more subjects that share the same verb
Compound Verb Made up of two or more verbs that share the same subject
Declarative Sentence (.) Expresses a statement, and always ends with a period
Interrogative Sentence (?) Asks a question, and always ends with a question mark
Imperative Sentence (. or !) Tells or asks someone to do something (Command) *Mom & Dad sentences*
Exclamatory (!) Shows strong feeling, and always ends with an exclamation point
Subject Compliment Word or group of words that follows a linking verb and renames or describes the subject
Predicate Noun Follows the linking verb and defines/renames the subject
Predicate Adjective Follows the linking verb and describes a quality of the subject
Direct Object A word or group of words that names the receiver of the action, and answers the question what or whom
Indirect Object A word or group of words that tells to what or whom or for what the action is done
Sentence Fragment Part of a sentence that is written as if it were a complete sentence
Run-On Sentences Two or more sentences written as if they were a single sentence
