The idea for the StudyStack "program" originated in 1992 when John wrote a small flash card like program.  Although he never released that first program, that idea is what sparked his interest in developing the studystack web site.  Almost ten years later, John decided that the "studystack " idea could turn into a useful resource for students as a web site.

Since he had no outside funding to create this website, freely available tools from the Apache Group, such as, Tomcat and log4j, and MySQL were used.  The StudyStack.com domain name was registered using GoDaddyDigitalSpace was selected as a capable and economical web hosting company that supports both Java Server Pages and MySQL.  Fast Click is used to deliver advertising to offset the cost of running the site.  The HTML files were created using NOTEPAD and uploaded with WS_FTP.

A Model 1 JSP architecture was used to quickly prototype the web site.  But this may eventually change to use Apache Struts to refactor the java server pages and servlets to have a better model-view-controller architecure.

The website has been submitted to the major search engines and to many other educational websites and directories.  In addition, StudyStack has joined some webrings such as The High School Quiz Bowl Webring and The Official quizbowl webring.   StudyStack has also joined some educational banner exchange programs such as Home School Yellow Pages and EduBanners.

Data from StudyStack can be exported to several flashcard programs that run on your PDA or desktop computer. A beta version of "StudyMe" is now available to review flashcards on your J2ME enabled cellphone.  As the number of studystacks created increases, John plans to provide other tools (and games) that use the same data already entered for a studystack.
