Graphing
Term | Definition |
---|---|
axes | the base line for the independent and dependent variables on a graph intersects at (0,0) |
horizontal | left to right |
vertical | up and down |
x-axis | left to right, location of the independent variable on a graph |
y-axis | up and down, location of the dependent variable on a graph |
best fit line | a straight line drawn on a graph that contains as many data points as possible to show a trend |
slope | the steepness of a straight line shown on a graph, determined using (delta)y/(delta)x |
positive slope | a line that shows increasing horizontal values and increasing vertical on a graph |
negative slope | a line shows increasing horizontal values and decreasing vertical values on a graph |
constant slope | a straight line on a graph that doesn't change |
independent variable | the manipulated variable in an experiment or lab in which the change is decided before data is collected; displayed on the x-axis of a graph |
dependent variable | the responding variable in an experiment or lab that is affected by the change of the independent variable displayed on the y-axis of a graph |
scale | the regular number increment that represents the information depicted on the axis, should start with 0 and include the maximum data value |
ordered pair | a data point on a graph represented in the order of (x,y) |
