AHTG 2 Questions

QuestionAnswer
What was the virgina plan, and new jersey plan? V: Each state has proportional representation in the Congress -- Better for bigger states, based on population. (HOUSE) J: Each state would have equal representation, better for smaller states (SENATE)
What were the three compromises on slavery? Slave trade could not be abolished for 20 years, slaves counted as 3/5 of a person for taxation and representation, fugitive slaves were to be returned to their owners

Differences between the "hot" House, and the "cool" Senate. The house is bigger than the senate, and full of young, enthusiastic members who serve for 2 years - "hot" in its responsiveness to public opinion. The senate has older people who serve for longer, and is "cool" with wisdom and reflection.
What examples of factions do we see today? Has Madison's Extended Republic Theory held true, or have factions ever gained political power? Madison's idea was that there are many factions, and they would render the body politic more stable (rather than less). In a large continent, factions would contend with one another so that overall, no single faction would succeed. Ex. Political parties?
Explain Hume's filter today, and name some advantages and disadvantages of direct elections vs indirect elections through filters. An advantage is that the people wouldn't have to vote for every single government official, but a disadvantage is that if an unvirtuous president is elected, he then chooses unvirtuous officials.
What are three structural solutions in government? Structural devices/constitutional mechanisms, Separation of powers, Checks and Balances
Who wrote "Thoughts on Government" and what was his purpose? John Adams. Thoughts on the best form of government, served as a guide to those making new state constitutions. Govn't should promote happiness, and be ruled by law and not man. Checks and Balances and Elections.
