CDVS: Dx & Tx
Diagnostics and treatments for cardiovascular pathologies.
Question | Answer |
---|---|
angiography | A radiographic study of the blood vessels after the injection of a contrast medium. It is used to study blood flow in the arteries, viens, and blood vessels of the heart. |
cardiac catheterization | a diagnostic procedure in which a catheter is passed into a vein or artery and then guided into the heart |
venography | Radiographic imaging of a vein (after an injection of contrast media. Used to dx DVT. |
Electrocardiogram (ECG) | A recording of the electrical activity of the heart |
Holter monitor | a portable electrocardiograph that is worn by an ambulatory patient to continuously monitor the heart rates and rhythms over a 24-hour period |
Stress test | Performed to assess cardiovascular health and function during and after stress. It involves monitoring with EKG while the pt exercises on a treadmill or injected with medication. |
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) | also known as a heart-lung machine, is a device sometimes used to maintain the circulation of blood and oxygen to the body during surgery |
angioplasty | the technique of mechanically widening a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel |
stent | wire-mesh tube used to keep arteries open |
atherectomy | surgical removal of plaque buildup from the interior of an artery |
carotid endarterectomy | the surgical removal of the lining of a portion of a clogged carotid artery leading to the brain |
coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) | a piece of vein from the leg or chest is implanted on the heart to replace a blocked coronary artery and to improve the flow of blood to the heart (AKA bypass surgery) |
defibrillation | the use of electrical shock to restore the heart's normal rhythm |
automated external defibrillator (AED) | A device that detects treatable life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias (ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia) and delivers the appropriate electrical shock to the patient. |
implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) | a device implanted into the chest to treat dysrhythmias |
cardiac ablation | a procedure that uses radio-frequency energy (heat) or cryoablation (extreme cold) to scar or destroy the heart tissue triggering an abnormal heart rhythm |
valvuloplasty | surgical repair of a valve |
heart valve replacement | surgery to replace one of the heart's four valves, usually the aortic or mitral valve |
aneurysmectomy | surgical removal of an aneurysm |
aneurysmorrhaphy | the surgical suturing of an aneurysm |
aneurysm clipping | Surgical method to isolate an aneurysm from the rest of the circulatory system by placing a small clip across its neck. Clip remains permanently in place, preventing blood from flowing into aneurysm. |
arteriectomy | surgical removal of part of an artery |
hemostasis | to stop or control bleeding |
plasmapheresis | The removal of whole blood from the body and separation of the blood's cellular elements. Patients with certain autoimmune disorders receive their own RBC and PLT back cleansed of antibodies. |
