QuestionAnswer
The five elements in Chinese medical theory represent ? Transformational shifts of energy and/or matter within nature.
The 5-Elements theory was developed when ? After the Yin/Yang theory in 200BC (Yin/Yang =700BC)
The word "element" should not be confused with the actual elements. Instead, they can be looked upon as ? "phases, changes of phenomena, processes, or qualities"
Liver/Gallbladder = The Wood element (SPRING)
Heart/Small Intestine = The Fire element (SUMMER)
Pericardium/Sanjiao = The Fire element (SUMMER)
Spleen/Stomach = The Earth element (INDIAN/LATE SUMMER)
Lung/Large Intestine = The Metal element (FALL/AUTUMN)
Kidney/Bladder = The Water element (WINTER)
All the elements depend on & interact with each other, allowing the practitioner to see ? Relative patterns & relationships.
The Fire element controls what element? Metal element
The Earth element controls what element? Water element
The Metal element controls what element? Wood element
The Water element controls what element? Fire element
The Wood element controls what element? Earth element
The Fire element produces which element? Earth(as ashes)
The Earth element produces which element? Metal(as ore)
The Metal element produces which element? Water(melting when heated)
The Water element produces which element? Wood(by feeding trees)
The Wood element produces which element? Fire(as fuel)
In Oriental medicine, The organs are always discussed in reference to their ? 1)Functions;What they govern 2) Relationships with the 5 fundamental substances 3) Relationship with the 5 elements.
The Yin/Yang organs are also called ? Zang/Fu organs
Yin(Zang organs) are which 6 organs? Lung, Spleen, Heart, Kidney, Pericardium, Liver.
Yang(Fu organs)are which 6 organs? Large Intestine, Stomach, Small Intestine, Bladder, Sanjiao, Gallbladder.
Yin(Zang organs) function is to ? Produce, transform, regulate, and store Fundamental Substances. THEY ARE MORE INFLUENTIAL THAN YANG ORGANS.
The Lungs (regulates/in charge of/responsible for) ? Govern Qi and respiration, and influence bodily fluids.
The Spleen (regulates/ in charge of/responsible for) ? Governs transportation/transformation of food and holds the blood in place.
The Heart (regulates/in charge of/responsible for) ? Governs the blood, blood vessels, and pulse. Houses the Shen(Spirit)
The Kidney (responsible for) ? Stores Jing(Essence), responsible for reproduction, growth and development, influences bodily fluids, and is the source of ALL Yin & Yang in the body.
The Pericardium (responsible for) ? Surrounds and protects the Heart from pathogenic influences.
The Liver (responsible for) ? Stores the blood, and rules the smooth flow and spreading of Qi.(Balances Qi)
The Yang(Fu) organs function is to ? Receive, break down, absorb food, and excrete waste.
Disease, problem with organ/meridian, unresolved/overpowering emotion, Poor nutrition, Fast placed lifestyle, not enough sleep/rest, overworked, inability to have meaningful relationships/connections. All examples of Imbalance within the 5-Elements resulting in disharmony somewhere in the body.
Represents the order that the elements and their related organs follow the pattern of how each helps to create the next in the sequence. The Generating Sequence

Late Summer, Spleen, Stomach, Damp, Transformation, Yellow, Sweet, Fragrant, Mouth(taste), Muscles & Flesh, Worry, Singing, Houses Thought. Earth element characteristics
Autumn(Fall), Lung, Large Intestine, Dryness, Harvest, White, Pungent, Rotten, Nose(smell), Skin & body hair, Sadness/Grief, Weeping/crying, Houses Corporeal Soul. Metal element characteristics
Winter, Kidney, Bladder, Cold, Storage, Blue/Black, Salty, Putrid, Ears(hearing), Bones & head hair, Fear/fright, Groaning, Houses Willpower. Water element characteristics
Muscle spasm, High blood pressure, Substance abuses. Typical problems of Wood.
Anxiety, Insomnia, Nervous disorders, Hypoglycemia(low blood sugar), more prone to heart palpitations, Rashes. Typical problems of Fire
Water retention, Tender muscles, Lethargy, (PMS problems). Typical problems of Earth
Stiff joints & muscles, Shallow breathing, Poor circulation. Typical problems of Metal
Insomnia, Worry, Nervousness, Often feel closed off from other people. Typical problems of Water
A dark face(ruddy), A tall slender body and fairly broad shoulders, Strong bones,sinews, Strong,straight back. Wood types have these physical traits.
A reddish face, Small pointed chin,head, Curly hair, or no hair, Small hands, Good circulation, strong pulse, and healthy skin. Fire types have these physical traits.
Darkish complexion and large body, Large head & belly(pear shaped), Strong thighs, Wide jaws. Earth types have these physical traits.
Broad strong shoulders, Triangular white face, strongly built body and voice. Metal types have these physical traits.
A round face and body, Soft white skin, Strong digestive system. Water types have these physical traits.
Starts at Lateral side of Big toe along medial side of leg and chest ending between the 6th/7th ribs directly below the nipple. Liver Meridian (Direction UP!)
Starts at the lateral eye,goes up and zigzags on the head, then goes down the lateral side of the neck, chest, and legs to the lateral side of the 4th toe. Gallbladder Meridian (Direction DOWN!)
Starts at the center of the armpit, along Yin part of the arm to radial side of the little finger. Heart Meridian (Arms overhead/Direction UP!)
Starts at the ulnar side of the little finger, along the Yang side of the arm, Zigzags across scapula, up the neck to the front of the ear. Small Intestine(Direction Down arms/Up face)
Starts at the lateral side of the nipple, along the Yin side of the arm, to the tip of the middle finger. Pericardium (Direction UP!)
Starts at the tip of the 4th(ring) finger, along the Yang part of the arm, up the neck, to the ear, to the lateral tip of the eyebrow. Sanjiao(triple burner)Direction Down!
Starts at the medial side of the big toe, along the medial leg, to the lateral side of the ribs between 6th/7th intercostal space. Spleen (Direction UP)
Starts at lower edge of eye socket, down face, then up to hairline, and down anterior neck, chest , and leg to the lateral side of the 2nd toe. Stomach (Direction DOWN!)
Starts at the upper chest along the Yin side of the arm to the lateral tip of the thumb. Lung (Direction UP)
Starts at the radial side of the index finger, along the Yang part of the arm over the shoulder and neck, to the lateral border of the nose. Large Intestine (Direction DOWN)
Starts at the sole of the foot, along the medial side of the leg and chest to just under the clavicle. Kidney (Direction UP)
Starts at the medial corner of the eye, over the head, down the back and legs to the lateral side of the little toe. Bladder (Direction DOWN!)
Starts at the the Perineum, Up the anterior midline, to the lower lip. REN(Conception vessel) Direction UP
Starts at the Coccyx, up the midline of the posterior back, over the head to the upper lip. DU(Governing Vessel) Direction Up and over head, then down to face.
