Postmortem | after death. |
Terminal | life-ending illness. |
Five Stages of Grief | denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance (DABDA). |
CPR | Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. |
DNR | Do Not Resuscitate (No-Code order). |
Advance Directives | a document that is put into effect if the patient later becomes unable to make decisions (two types: living will and durable power of attorney). |
Living Will | a document listing a person's wishes for medical treatment in the event that they can no longer speak for themselves (must be signed by 2 witnesses). |
Durable Power of Attorney | a document naming someone to make medical decisions for the patient (this 'someone' is also called the health care proxy; usually someone who is related or very close to the person and knows what the person's wishes are; must be signed by 2 witnesses). |
Cardiac Arrest | the heart stops beating (arrhythmia, asystole). |
Respiratory Arrest | the breathing stops (apnea). |
AED | Automatic External Defibrillator. |
Hospice Care | end of life care that focuses on pain relief and comfort (a patient must have a diagnosis of less than 6 months to live in order to qualify). |
Palliative Care | care that focuses on pain relief and comfort and quality of life for anyone suffering with a chronic or long-term illness. |
Supportive Care | patient's life will not be artificially prolonged, but they will be made comfortable physically, mentally, and emotionally. |
Life-sustaining Treatment | giving medications and treatments and utilizing equipment for the purpose of maintaining life (life-support such as ventilator and tube feedings). |
Moribund | changes that take place in the body upon death (pupils become permanently dilated). |
Rigor Mortis | body rigidity that takes place 2-4 hours after death. |
Autopsy | examination of the body after death to determine the cause of death. |
POLST | Physician's Order for Life Sustaining Treatment. |
Cheyne-Stokes | abnormal breathing seen in the end stages of dying (rapid breathing with no periods of apnea). |
Apnea | no breathing. |
Dyspnea | difficulty breathing. |
Cyanosis | bluish skin (usually indicates hypoxia or low oxygen). |
Analgesia | any medication used to treat or control pain. |
Anti-emetic | medication used to prevent or treat nausea and vomitting. |
