pituitary | a small gland toward the bottom of the brain has 2 lobes |
hypophysis | pituitary gland beneath the hypothalamus |
anterior pituitary lobe | produces 6 hormones including GH stimulates growth and acts on other tissues and glands |
posterior pituitary lobe | produces ADH and oxytocin in the hypothalamus |
hypothalamus | part of the brain that produces hormones, maintains homeostasis, and controls both pituitary lobes |
thyroid | 2 lobes on either side of the larynx and upper trachea secretes a mixture of hormones that affect metabolism and growth |
parathyroid | 4-6 spots on the posterior thyroid gland that regulates blood calcium levels |
adrenals | glands on top of the kidneys has 2 regions |
cortex | the outer region of the adrenal gland that secretes steroid hormones |
medulla | the inner region of the adrenal gland that secretes epinephrine and controls the body's response to stress |
pancreatic islets | endocrine clusters that regulate insulin metabolism |
