Bill A formal written proposal for a new law.
Filibuster When a Senator speaks at length in order to delay a vote being held on a bill.
Cloture When 60 votes are cast in the Senate to force a vote on a bill.
Bicameral A two chamber legislature.
Senate Upper chamber of Congress with 2 elected officials for each State.
House of Representatives Lower chamber of Congress with elected officials from each State based on population.
100 Total number of US Senators.
435 Total number of US Representatives.
6 Term length (in years) for a Senator.
2 Term length (in years) for a Representative.
January 3rd The date every odd year that a new term for Congress begins.
Speaker of the House Leader of the House of Representatives from selected the majority party.
President Pro Tempore Leader of the Senate selected from the majority party.
Vice President Presides over the Senate and votes in the case of a tie.
Delegate An elected official who votes based on the views of their constituents.
Trustee An elected official who votes based on their own judgment.
Politico An elected official who votes to stay in everyone's good graces.
Partisan An elected official who votes on issues based on the positions of their political party.
Standing Committees Permanent groups in Congress who meet regularly with outlined responsibilities.
Select Committees Temporary groups in Congress who meet for a limited time period and have a special purpose.
Joint Committee A group in Congress made up of members of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Gerrymandering The redrawing of electoral district lines by a state government to benefit the political party in power.
Charges The House of Representatives brings up ________________ of impeachment.
Article I The part of the Constitution that established the Legislative Branch.
Census An official count of the nation's population conducted every 10 years.

Pocket Veto When the President rejects a bill by not signing it for 10 days when Congress is not in session.
