Technology Terms

Definitions of various technology terms you can come across

Assistive technology generic term used to refer to a group of software or hardware devices by which people with disabilities can access computers
E-mail a method to exchange digital messages
Simulation programs, software or web-based, that model real or imaginary system to help leaners understand that system.
Bulletin board An electronic message center. Most bulletin boards serve specific interest groups. They allow you to dial in with a modem, review messages left by others, and leave your own message if you want.
Hypermedia An extension to hypertext that supports linking graphics, sound, and video elements in addition to text elements. Ex. The internet.
Software Computer instructions or data. Anything that can be stored electronically is software.
Chat room A virtual room where a chat session takes place.
Internet A global network connecting millions of computers, decentralized by design. Each Internet computer, called a host, is independent.
URL Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web. First part of address is a protocol identifier,indicates what protocol to use, second part is resource name, specifies the IP address/domain in name.
Distance education instructinoal strategy that uses a problem and the data gathered appempts to solve it as the focal point of a lesson
Problem-based learning Organized instruction programs where teachers and learners, physically seperated, are connected through technology
Websites A site (location) on the World Wide Web. Each Web site contains a home page, each site is owned and managed by an individual, company or organization.
Pixel is a single point in a graphic image.Graphics monitors display pictures by dividing the display screen into thousands (or millions) of pixels, arranged in rows and columns. The pixels are so close together that they appear connected.
Icon A small picture that represents an object or program.
Spreadsheet program Table of values arranged in rows and columns. Each value can have a predefined relationship to the other values. These are computer programs that let you create and manipulate spreadsheets electronically.
Computer literacy The level of expertise and familiarity someone has with computers. Computer literacy generally refers to the ability to use applications rather than to program.
Instructional technology combination of the processes and tools needed to address educational needs
Tutorial A program designed to help teach a new user how to use the program. Goes through key features and functions of things such as software applications, hardware devices, processes, system designs, and programming languages. Set up as a series of steps.
Database program A collection of information organized in such a way that a computer program can quickly select desired pieces of data. You can think of a database as an electronic filing system.
RAM random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes.There are two different types:DRAM and SRAM.
Plotters A device that draws pictures on paper based on commands from a computer.They draw lines using a pen. As a result, they can produce continuous lines, whereas printers can only simulate lines by printing a closely spaced series of dots.
Port An interface on a computer to which you can connect a device.
Expansion slot An opening in a computer where a circuit board can be inserted to add new capabilities to the computer.
CD-ROM Short for Compact Disc-Read-Only Memory, a type of optical disk capable of storing large amounts of data
Video Port is responsible for sending signals to the display device.
Processor Short for microprocessor or CPU. A silicon chip that contains a CPU.At the heart of all personal computers and most work stations sits a processor.
