Chamber Work A work for a small group of musicians intended to be played in a small room or venue
Canon Created when a melody is imitated by one or more parts at a fixed distance and interval
Inversion Taking a melody and turning it upside down, inverting its melodic shape
Retrograde Rewriting and performing an original melodic line in reverse
Augmentation Lengthening the value of the original notes in a melodic theme
Diminuation Shortening the value of the original notes in a melodic theme
Wedging Stretching the interval distance of the original melody
Splicing Reducing the interval distance of the original melody
Polymetry Combining two different metres/time signatures simultaneously
Counterpoint Combining two or more different melodies simultaneously
Telescoping Taking the first and final note or fragments from several sections of work and combing them together
espressivo instructs performers to play with an expressive quality
subito suddenly/immediately- preceding or following another marking
sforzando to play a note with sudden, strong emphasis
poco accelerando instructs performer to play a little faster
molto very- preceding or following another marking
8ve an instruction on the score to play an octave higher or lower than written
hammered instructs performer to play note with force
clusters playing a group of adjacent notes simultaneously on piano. Creates a dissonant sound
Detaché instructs performer to use a separate movement of the bow for each note
Open string when the string played without a finger placed on the fingerboard
Double stopping when a string player plays two notes at the same time
Harmonics overtones that create a light whistling sound
Flautando instructs string players to move the bow across the strings over the fretboard instead of playing close to the bridge, creating a flute-like sound
Senza vibrato instructs performer to play without vibration
