Unit 3 Basic Skills Part 1

DefinitionTerm
a number that shows how many times a base is used as a factor exponent
the repeated factor of a number written in exponential form base
a number written as repeated multiplication in exponential form power
any number raised to the “second power” squared
any number raised to the “third power” cubed
a mnemonic device used as a way to remember the order to solve numeric expressions GEMDAS or PEMDAS
the symbols (parenthesis), [brackets], or {braces} used to show order in math grouping symbols
the measure of the amount of space enclosed by a figure, in square units area
the distance around the outside of a figure, in straight units perimeter
the side that is perpendicular to (makes a right angle with) the height of a figure base (of a figure)
the part that is perpendicular to (makes a right angle with) the base of a figure height (of a figure)
part of a whole when the whole is split into equal parts fraction
the top number in a fraction; the part being used numerator
the bottom number in a fraction; how many parts make one whole denominator
a fraction with the numerator (top) smaller than the denominator (bottom); shows less than one whole proper fraction
a fraction with the numerator (top) greater than or equal to the denominator (bottom); shows more than one whole; can be written as a mixed number improper fraction
an amount greater than one whole shown with a whole number and a fraction mixed number
an amount less than one whole shown using place value decimal
the measure of the amount of space a figure takes up; written in cubic units (units3) volume
