Cabinet | a defined group of presidential advisers consisting of 15 department heads |
chief of staff | responsible for the smooth operation of the White House and the swift and accurate flow of business and information |
commander in chief | leader of the military |
executive agreement | resembles a treaty but does not require the Senate's 2/3 vote |
executive order | empowers the president to carry out the law or to administer the government |
executive privilege | the right to withhold information or advice they received |
inherent powers | those that may not be explicitly listed but are essentially in the jurisdiction of the executive |
line-item veto | empowers an executive to eliminate one line of a bill, eliminating one part, but not all, of a bill |
Line Item Veto Act (1996) | gave the president line-item veto authority with regard to appropriations, spending and taxes |
National Security Council | consists of the president's principal advisers on matters of national security, defense intelligence and war |
recess appointments | if the Senate is not in session when a vacancy arises, the president can appoint a replacement that will serve until the Senate reconvenes and votes on that official |
State of the Union | constitutional requirement imposed on the president to deliver an annual report regarding the current state of the nation to Congress |
12th Amendment (1804) | electors vote for president and for vice president |
20th Amendment (1933) | Inauguration date moved from March 4 to January 20 |
25th Amendment (1967) | addresses presidential vacancy and disability |
