Enzymes
as part of 91156 Cell Biology Level 2 NCEA
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Active site | The part of an enzyme to which the substrate(s) bind. Has a specific shape. |
Co-factor | Specific chemical which must be present for a particular enzyme to function. |
Denature | This will happen if the shape of an enzyme's active site is altered and the substrate(s) can no longer bind. This makes the enzyme permanently inactive. |
Enzyme | Are globular proteins that act as biological catalysts by having a lower activation energy for a reaction to occur. |
Inhibitor | Prevent the substrate binding with the active site of the enzyme, by either blocking the active site or changing its shape. |
Induced to fit model | The active site of the enzyme can temporarily change shape for the substrate(s) to bind to it and the reaction to occur. |
Lock and Key model | The substrate can only fit into the enzyme if it is an exact match to the shape of the active site. |
Specific | enzymes can only act on one type of substrate |
Substrate | The chemical the enzyme is interacting with |
The enzyme-substrate complex | when the substrate binds with the active site of the enzyme allow the reaction to be catalyzed. |
