Atom | the smallest particle of an element |
Chemical formula | represents the type and number of atoms present in a particular substance |
Chemical symbol | one or two letters representing a chemical element |
Compound | composed of two or more different elements that are chemically combined |
Element | a pure substance composed of the same type of atom throughout |
Molecule | – refers to the simplest unit of a chemical compound that can exist; formed when two or more atoms combine chemically |
Mixtures | mixing chemical substances such as elements and compounds, without chemical bonding or other chemical change, so that each ingredient substance retains its own chemical properties and makeup. |
Particle | a minute (very small) portion of matter. |
Periodic Table of Elements | organizes all discovered chemical elements in rows (called periods) and columns (called groups) according to increasing atomic number. |
Pure substance | a single kind of matter that cannot be separated into other kinds of matter by any physical means. |
Ratio | the quantitative relation between two amounts showing the number of times one value contains or is contained within the other. |
Solution | a liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent). |
Subscript | a small-sized number on the bottom right of the symbol. It refers to the number of atoms of the element. |
Coefficient | The numbers placed in front of formulas to balance equations that multiply all the atoms in a formula. |
