Dysarthria Characteristics

Characteristics of Spastic Dysarthria | Strained or strangled voice quality (Result of increased muscle tone in the velum, which causes slowness and reduced ROM during VP closure) |
Characteristics of Flaccid Dysarthria | Breathy phonation, AMRs will show reduced rate of phoneme production |
Characteristics of Hyperkinetic Dysarthria | Excessive involuntary movements of body parts (tics, myoclonus, chorea, dystonia, essential tremor) |
Characteristics of Hypokinetic Dysarthria (7) | Resting tremor, bradykinesia, akinesia, masked facies, muscle rigidity, shuffling gait, disturbance in postural reflexes |
Characteristics of Ataxic Dysarthria | Normal oral structure at rest. Primarily an articulation and prosodic disorder. Motor planning intact. |
Characteristics of Unilateral UMN Dysarthria | Weakness and incoordination on the lower side of the face and tongue opposite the UMN lesion |
