What is an inclined plane? A flat, slanted surface that allows input force to be exerted over longer distances.
What is a wedge? A wedge is a device that is thick on one end and tapers to a thin edge on the other end. It can be considered as 2 inclined planes back-to-back.
What is a screw? An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. The closer the threads, the greater the mechanical advantage.
What is a lever? A rigid bar that is free to pivot or rotate about a fixed point called a fulcrum.
What is a wheel and axle? Two cylindrical objects that are fastened together and rotate about a common axis.
What is a pulley? A grooved wheel with a rope, chain, or cable wrapped around it which can be pulled to change the direction and force on an object.
What are the 3 ways to use pulleys? Pulleys can be fixed, movable, or part of a system.
How many classes of levers are there? There are 3 classes of levers: first class, second class, and third class.
It takes 30 N of force to move a desk 10 m. How much work is complete? 300 joules
It takes 14 joules of work to move a can of paint 2 meters. How many Newtons of force are used? 7 Newtons
It takes 200 joules of work and 20 Newtons of force to move a lunch table across the hallway and cafeteria. How far were the tables pushed? 10 meters.
What are some real world examples of levers? seesaw, paint can opener, shovel, rake, wheelbarrow
True or False: To lift a heavy object with the least amount of effort, you should put the fulcrum of a first class lever closer to the effort instead of the load. False, you place the fulcrum near the load.
Which surface will create more friction - waxed paper or sandpaper? sandpaper
True or False: Using a lubricant decreases friction between two surfaces. True
What are some real world examples of a wheel and axle system? bike wheels, car wheels, door knobs, screw driver
True or False: Force decreases when motion transfers from axle to wheel and magnifies when it transfers from wheel to axle. True
