The Eye 2-15

Eyebrows, Eyelids & Eyelashes help protect eyes
Lacrimal glands secrete lacrimal fluid (tears) through lacrimal canals and nasolacrimal duct, which allows tears to drain into the nasal cavity
Tears contain a bacteria-killing enzyme called lysozyme
Sclera “white” part of eye - strong connective tissue that gives the eye its shape and protects the inner parts
Iris “color” part of eye - consists of circular and radial smooth muscle fibers and regulates the amount of light that enters the eye
Pupil The hole in the center of the iris A. In bright light the circular muscles contract and decrease the size of the pupil. B. In dim light the radial muscles contract and increase the size of the pupil
Cornea clear portion of eye that refracts (bends) light
Choroid a thin membrane that contains blood vessels that nourish the retina
Ciliary body A. Ciliary process secretes fluid (aqueous humor) B. Ciliary muscle- smooth muscle that alters the shape of the lens
Lens made of elastic protein fibers and is a transparent structure that focuses light on the retina
Suspensory ligaments attach ciliary muscles to lens.
Retina lines the back of the eye that consists of: A. Contains cones: color vision B. Contains rods: low light vision
Aqueous humor fluid between cornea and iris - supplies nutrients and oxygen to the lens and cornea. (Constant replacement)
Vitreous humor jelly-like substance located behind the iris - helps attach the retina to the choroid. (formed during embryonic development and is not ever replaced)
Intraocular pressure is maintained by mainly the ________. aqueous humor
