What is fiction? | writing that comes from an author's imagination |
What is a short story? | This usually revolves around a single idea and is short enough to be read in one sitting. |
What is a main character? | the person or animal that is at the center of the story (the one with the conflict) |
What is a minor character? | a character who is not essential to the plot |
What is a novel? | Literature that is much longer and more complex than a short story. |
What are characters? | the people, animals, or imaginary creatures that take part in the action of a story |
What is a setting? | the time and place in which the story happens |
What is the plot? | the sequence of events in a story |
What is the conflict? | a problem or struggle between two or more opposing forces |
What is exposition? | the first part of the plot. It sets the stage for the story by introducing the characters, the setting, and the conflict |
What is the rising action (also called "complications")? | the part of the plot after the exposition and before the climax. The plot gets more complex in the rising action (While the characters struggle to find solutions to the conflict, suspense and a feeling of excitement and energy build.) |
What is the climax? | the highest point of interest or suspense in the story; the turning point of the story (The outcome of the conflict is decided.) |
What is the resolution? | This occurs at the conclusion of the story. Loose ends are tied up, and the story ends. |
What is a theme? | the author's message in a piece of literature (the author's statement about life) |
