Question | Answer |
---|---|
parent function | all linear functions will be compared to the parent function y=x, where m=1 and b=0 |
direct variation | “varies directly” any linear function that goes through the origin has a constant of proportionality y=kx (k is a special name for slope because it is a constant). |
parameter change | any change that is made to the slope (m) or y-intercept(b) in comparison to the parent function y=x. The change can affect the m or b, or both. This is known as a transformation. |
linear function | has a constant rate of change, graphs as a line. |
Slope-intercept form of a line | y= mx +b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. |
Standard Form of a line | Ax + By= C, A and B are integers, graph using intercept method |
Point-Slope Form of a line | This is used to write an equation in slope-intercept form if you are given a slope and point. |
Rate of change or slope | change in y over change in x OR rise over run |
y intercept | where a function crosses the y axis known as b (0,y) |
x intercept | where a function crosses the x axis (x ,0) |
zero of a function | any function f(x)=0, this would be your x-intercept, when y=0. |
function notation | written as f(x), “f of x”, same as y |
linear inequality | ex: y>x, all points greater than the line of y=x satisfies that inequality, a shaded region on a graph. |
