DSMS Organelles 2
Overview of Basic Organelles
Word | Definition |
---|---|
Cell Membrane | The outer edge of the cell. It controls what goes into the cell and what comes out. |
Nucleus | The control center of the cell. It contains the DNA. |
Chromosomes | Coiled structure of DNA and protein in the nucleus. |
Nuclear Membrane | The outer edge of the nucleus. It controls what goes into the nucleus and what comes out. |
Mitochondria | The powerhouse of the cell. it provides energy for the cell's activities. |
Cytoplasm | The jelly-like fluid inside of the cell. |
Ribosome | Makes proteins by using a copy of DNA as its instructions. |
Endoplasmic Reticulum | Houses the ribosomes and transports proteins. |
Golgi Complex | Package proteins for use or to be released from the cell. |
Lysosomes | Digest food particles, wastes, cell parts, and invaders. |
Vacuole | Stores water, nutrients, and wastes. |
Cell Wall | Stiff covering of plant cells that provides support. |
Chloroplast | Make food from carbon dioxide and water by using chlorophyll to capture sunlight energy. |
Cytoskeleton | Internal framework of protein which play an essential role in cell movement, shape, and division. |
Vesicle | Small sac that contains proteins. |
Tissue | A group of cells working together. |
Organ | A group of tissues working together. |
Organ System | A group of organs working together. |
Organism | Something that can live on its own. |
Cell Theory | A three part idea about cells which states: All living things are made of cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and all cells come from existing cells. |
Organelle | One of a cell's parts that are specialized to perform a specific function. |
Prokaryote | A basic cell that does not have a nucleus. |
Eukaryote | A complex cell that has a nucleus. |
Differentiation | The process of cells taking on specific functions |
Cellular Respiration | The process of making ATP from glucose and oxygen. |
Photosynthesis | The process of making glucose from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of light energy. |
Robert Hooke | Discovered cells while examining cork. |
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek | Saw "animalcules" in pond water. |
