Vocabulary used in measuring distance and scale in maps

| scale (for measurement) | A series of marks at regular intervals on an instrument that is used for measuring | INCH OR CENTIMETER MARKS ON A RULER, POUNDS OR KILOGRAMS GRAMS ON A WEIGHING SCALE, DEGREE MARKS ON A THERMOMETER |
| scale (proportional relation) | The relation between the actual size of something and its size on a map, diagram, or model that represents it | THE MILEAGE SCALE ON A MAP SAYS THAT 1 INCH = 100 MILES. |
| ratio | The relationship between two groups of people or things, represented by two numbers showing how much larger one group is than the other | THE RATIO OF MEN TO WOMEN IN A CITY IS 4 TO 5 (FOR EVERY 4 MEN, THERE ARE 5 WOMEN). |
| aspect ratio | The relationship between the width and the height of the image on the screen of a television, an electronic device, etc. | THE TELEVISION SCREEN HAS AN ASPECT RATiO OF 16:9 |

| perimeter | The total length of the outside edge of an area or a shape | THE PERIMETER OF A 10 X 15 FOOT BEDROOM IS 50 FEET. |
| area | The amount of space covered by a flat surface or piece of land (described as a measurement) | THE AREA OF A 10 X 15 FOOT BEDROOM IS 150 SQUARE FEET. |
| diagram | A simple drawing using lines to explain where something is, how something works, etc. | THE DIAGRAM IN THE INSTRUCTIONS SHOWS HOW TO PUT THE PARTS OF A BOOKSHELF TOGETHER. |
