What is a fibre?   A fibre is a thin hair-like structure that is either short or long

What is the difference between a staple fibre and a filament fibre?   Staple fibres are short fibres, when they are spun into yarn it has a slightly hairy appearance. Filament fibres are very long continuous fibres.

What sort of fibres are silk fibres?   These are filament fibres. They are very long and give silk a shiny appearance.

How are yarns made?   Yarns are made by twisting fibres together. This is called 'spinning'.

Give three reasons why natural fibres are more environmentally friendly.   1. Biodegradable 2. Can be recycled 3. From renewable sources.

What are the steps between harvesting a fibre and making a fabric?   Harvesting > cleaning > straightening of fibres > fibres spun into yarn > yarn woven into fabric

Name some general properties of natural fibres.   Biodegradable, absorbent, strong, recyclable, poor resistant to biological damage e.g. moths, mould.
