the Truman Doctrine   America's response to Soviet control of eastern Europe. It declared that the US would aid other countries to resist communism.

containment   the US policy that aimed to halt the spread of communism and contain it to countries where it was already established.

the Marshall Plan   The USA gave financial aid to Europe for its rebuilding after WW2 to prevent poverty which they felt led to spread of communism.

peaceful co-existence   a policy developed by Khrushchev to enable capitalism and communism to exist side by side peacefully in the world.

detente   an easing of tensions between the Cold War superpowers.

Glasnost   a policy of openness introduced by Gorbachev which allowed people to criticise the communist system
