Term
Definition
Linear equation   An equation that has a variable that is to the first power. In other words, a particular change in the x-direction leads to a directly proportional change in the y-direction.
🗑
Quadratic expression   Polynomials of the form ax^2+bx+c , where a, b, and c are real numbers, and a is a nonzero number.
🗑
Quadratic equation   An equation that includes a quadratic expression.
🗑
Descending order   When terms are written from greatest to least degree.
🗑
Leading term   The term with the greatest degree.
🗑
Degree of a Monomial   The sum of the exponents of all of a term's variables.
🗑
Degree of a Poylnomial   The greatest degree of its terms.
🗑
Evaluate   Substitute given values for their respective variables and then simplify accordingly.
🗑
Order of operations   The established sequence in which math is performed from left to right on an expression in order to simplify. Simplify parenthetical operations 1st, exponential terms 2nd, multiplication and division 3rd, and add and subtract last.
🗑
Zero Product Property   If ab=0, then a=0 or b=0.
🗑
Leading term   The term with the greatest degree.
🗑
Square Root Property   If x^2=a, then x=±√a, where a is a number.
🗑
Completing the square   A method used to change the form of a quadratic equation of the form ax^2+bx+c=0, where a, b, and c are real numbers and a is non-zero, so that the left side of the equation becomes a perfect square trinomial.
🗑
Perfect square trinomial   A quadratic expression that is the product of a binomial, either (a+b) or (a−b), squared.
🗑
Quadratic formula   x=−b± √(b^2−4ac) / (2a), where a, b, and c are real numbers and a is non-zero.
🗑
Factoring   The process of rewriting an expression or polynomial as an equivalent product of two or more factors.
🗑
Greatest common factor (GCF)   The greatest factor all terms share in common.
🗑
Difference of squares   A quadratic expression of the form a^2−b^2 that can be factored as (a+b)(a−b).
🗑
Quadratic inequality   An inequality that contains a quadratic expression.
