| rock cycle | a series of processes on the surface and inside Earth that slowly changes rocks from one kind to another kind. |
| nonrenewable resource | a resource that is not naturally replaced quickly. (For example, it can take millions of years for rocks and minerals to form again.) |
| weathering | the process that breaks down rock and other substances on Earth's surfaces. Heat, cold, water, ice, oxygen & carbon dioxide all cause weathering.(Examples- cracked rocks,streets & sidewalks; rusted metal; peeled paint) |
| erosion | the movement of rock or soil by water, ice, wind or gravity (Both weathering & erosion reshape rocks on Earth's surface changing the topography.) |
| soil | the loose, weathered material on Earth's surface in which plants can grow |
| natural resources | anything in the environment that humans use but did not make (Examples are soil, rock, trees, ocean, etc.) |
| decomposer | a living thing that turns waste (dead plants and animals) into humus. (Decomposers are worms, molds & bacteria.) |
| crop rotation | the planting of different types of crops in a field each year to maintain the soil's fertility (One year may plant corn, next year may plant oats, the third year may plant beans.) |
| permeable | material that is full of tiny, connected air spaces that water can seep though |
