| Term | Definition |
| Force | the push or pull on or by an object |
| Gravitational Force | a force of attraction between two bodies, even though the bodies are not touching |
| Elastic Force | a force associated with materials, such as rubber bands, that stretch when acted upon |
| Newton | metric unit for force |
| Weight | measure of gravitational force (units in Newtons) |
| Friction | Occurs when two objects in contact rub against each other |
| Independent Variable | the variable in an experiment that can be changed or manipulated to determines its influence on the dependent variable |
| Dependent Variable | the variable in an experiment that is measured |
| Air Friction | also known as drag- occurs when an object moves rapidly through air and influences the speed of the object. |
| Spring Scale | a tool used to measure the amount of force of an object- units in newtons |
| Work | The result of force times distance. Units will be in Nm |
| Surface Area | the amount of an object that is exposed to another object (usually important in air friction) |
| Power | The amount of work completed over a period of time. Units as Nm/s |
| Energy | the ability to do work |
