| Term | Definition |
| element | made of only one kind of atom |
| atom | smallest part of an element that keeps its properties |
| symbol | abbreviation for an element (1-2 letters) |
| proton | positively charged subatomic particle in atom's nucleus |
| neutron | neutral subatomic particle in atom's nucleus |
| electron | negatively charged particle orbiting atom's nucleus |
| nucleus | small, dense, positively charged center of an atom |
| energy level | path in which electron moves around nucleus |
| 2 | capacity of 1st energy level |
| 8 | capacity of 2nd energy level |
| 18 | maximum capacity of 3rd energy level |
| valence | describes electrons in the outermost level in atom |
| atomic number | tells the # of protons in an atom |
| neutral | overall charge of an atom since the # of protons and electrons are equal |
| group/family | vertical column on periodic table; can be used to tell the # of outer (valence) electrons in an atom |
| period/series | horizontal row on periodic table; tells the # of occupied electron energy levels |
| Bohr model | shows how electrons are arranged in levels around nucleus |
| helium (He) | only element in the 'tall' groups whose group # does not tell the # of valence electrons |
| amu (atomic mass unit) | unit of mass used for subatomic particles/atoms since the kilogram is too large |
