Properties of satin and uses.	Can be silk, polyester or rayon. Shiny, good drape, weaker when wet, soft, smooth, pulls easily, hard to sew. Used for bridal, evening wear, linings, soft furnishings, ties, accessories.
Properties of polar fleece.	Polyester. Warm, lightweight, stretches, knitted, soft, can be recycled. Jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, dressing gowns.
Properties of plain weaves.	Cotton, linen, polyester. Strong, hardwearing, cool, easy to sew, cheap, shirts, dresses, linings, soft furnishings.
Properties of velvet, velveteen, velour.	Cotton/rayon/silk/polyester. Woven or knitted. Dense pile, warm, luxurious, not very hard wearing. Jackets, dresses, evening wear, cushions, bags.
Cotton drill	Twill weave, strong, durable can have lycra in to make stretchy. Trousers, jackets, workwear.
Knitted Jersey.	Can be wool, silk, cotton, acrylic, polyester. Warm, stretchy, fits well, can drape, low crease. Leggings, trousers, t-shirts, dresses.
Properties of felt.	Wool, polyester or acrylic. warm, insulating, non-woven, can pill (bobble) weaker when wet. coats, hats, toys, jackets, craft products.
Key facts to remember for the exam.	Fabrics must be fit for purpose. You need to understand the properties of fabrics before you can make a choice for a product. You should be able to recognise some common fabric names and understand what the properties of these fabrics are.
