| photo | still visual image captured with a camera |
| graphics | visual images or designs, often drawn or computer created, but can technically include photos |
| audio | sound |
| camera | apparatus for capturing video and/or photos |
| SD card | a memory storage item designed to store a high capacity of data in a small space |
| upload | to add media from a storage device to WeVideo |
| download | to retrieve audio or video from the internet to a device |
| microphone | a device for recording sound, especially voices |
| tripod | a three-legged stand designed to hold a camera |
| battery | often rechargeable, the part in an electronic device that powers it |
| shot | the composition seen in one frame of the camera's capture (can refer to video or photo) |
| wide shot | also called an establishing shot, shows the subject or environment some distance from the camera |
| medium shot | shows the subject in its entirety within some amount of background |
| tight shot | shows the subject closer and may focus on one aspect of the subject such as the face or hands |
| extreme close-up | shows only one aspect from very close range, often to point out detail or to emphasize the importance of a small item |
| rule of thirds | one of the main guidelines on framing good photo and video shots that takes into consideration the tendencies of the human eye to focus on certain intersecting lines in a composed image |
| eyes on third | the rule that says that a subject's eyes should align with certain imaginary lines in a composed camera shot |
| talking space | the space in front of the face of an interview subject, important to make sure that the subject looks like he or she is speaking to someone and not to the edge of the frame |
| jump cut | a poor editing move that ruins the continuity of the shot by providing an obvious interruption |
| cutaway | a shot of something other than the subject that can be used to insert between shots so that continuity is not negatively affected |
| continuity | established by editing to create action that flows smoothly over shots with having any jarring cuts |
| b-roll | supplemental or alternate footage related to a subject used to enhance a feature or news segment, sometimes background for voiceover |
| stand-up | when a television reporter appears in front of the camera to explain part of a story, often used as an introduction or to wrap up a segment |
| voiceover | a narration done by a reporter or an interview subject accompanying related video footage |
| interview | a conversation intended to elicit facts or opinions from a subject on camera |
| run time | the length of a finished video |
| green screen | the common name for an effect in which a solid colored background is replaced with a photo or video to give the appearance that the subject is elsewhere |
| chromakey | the technical name for an effect in which a solid colored background is replaced with a photo or video to give the impression that the subject is elsewhere |
| edit | to make changes to video and audio to produce new media |
| green | the color that we choose to replace when editing with chromakey |
| fade in/out | to gradually raise or lower levels in video and/or audio to avoid abrupt starts and stops in a produced piece of media |
| finish video | a command in our production software that is the last step in producing a video |
| share to project | a command in our production software that makes it possible for collaborators to use media that was uploaded into another person's "my media" |
| text | words that appear as part of a finished video |
| text overlay | text that appears over video |
| text slide | text that appears on a solid background as part of a finished video |
| title slide | text on a solid background that introduces a video, revealing its topic or name |
| credits | text, usually at the end of a video, that informs the viewer of information about the producer, actors, or content in the video |
