| Term | Definition |
| Negative number | a number less than zero and written with a negative sign in front of it |
| Numerator | top number in a fraction; indicates the number of equal parts that are described by the fraction |
| Per | for each |
| Percentage | a ratio or fraction with a denominator of 100 |
| Percentage change | represents the relative change between the new value and the original value of a quantity or item |
| Percent | means out of 100 |
| Percent decrease of a value | measures how that value decreases, as a percent of its original value |
| Percent increase of a value | measures how that value increases, as a percent of its original value |
| Proportion | two quantities are in _________ if they increase or decrease in the same ratio |
| Rate | a quantity measured with respect to another measured quantity e.g 60 miles per hour; A measure of a part with respect to a whole; a proportion; The cost per unit of a service |
| Ratio | the comparison of two quantities expressed in the form x:y |
| Simplest form | for a fraction - when the numerator and denominator have only 1 as their common factor; for a ratio- if the two quantities have only 1 as their common factor |
| Solution | the answer to a problem or the value or values of variables that will make the equation true (when substituted into the equation) |
| Solve | to find the answer to a problem or the value of a variable |
| Speed | a measure of how far an object can travel in a given unit of time |
| Average speed | this is found by considering only the total time taken by the object and the the total distance traveled. |
| Sum | the result from adding numbers |
| Table | a set of data or information that is organized in rows and columns |
| Tax | an amount of money paid to the government to help fund government expenditures or services |
| Sales tax | a tax imposed on goods purchased and services used. It is usually added to the item’s cost. |
| Income tax | a tax imposed based on one’s income (earnings) |
| Tenths | parts of one whole that is divided into 10 equal parts |
| Time | the duration or interval between two events. It is usually measured in seconds, minutes, hours and so on. |
| Vertical | this type of line is straight up and down |
