| Continental Drift | the gradual movement of the continents across the earth's surface. |
| Pangaea | landmass of all the continents that broke apart 200 million years ago. |
| Magnetometer | instrument that is used to measure magnetic forces. |
| Paleomagnetism | branch of geophysics concerned with the magnetism in rocks that was induced by the earths magnetic fields. |
| Magnetic Reversal | a change in the earth's magnetic fields which is resulting in the magnetic north being aligned with the geographic south. and the magnetic south being aligned with the geographic south. |
| isochron | line on a map that connects points relating to the same time zone. |
| Seafloor Spreading | the formation of new areas on the ocean floor. which is through magma coming up from mid ocean ridges. |
| Theory Of Plate Tectonics | earth divided into small numbers of plates which float on and travel independently over the mantle and much of earth. |
| Divergent Boundry | exist between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other. |
| Rift Valley | elongated depression with steep walls formed by downward displacement of earth's surface between fault systems. |
| Convergent Boundry | boundary where to plates are moving towards each other. |
| Subduction | downward and sideways movement of a plate of the earth's crust. |
| Transform Boundry | when two plates slide against each other in a sideways motion. |
| Ridge Push | proposed mechanism for plate motion in plate tectonics. |
| Slap pull | the portion of motion of a tectonic plate that can be accounted for by its subduction. |
