equation | a statement that two quantities are equal |
solve | to find the answer to a problem |
formula | an equation showing the relation between variables. |
variable | a quantity represented by a symbol (usually a letter) that can be any of a range of values |
inverse | another word for opposite |
inequality | a statement that two quantities are not equal |
linear equation | an equation where the highest power of the variable is 1 |
backtracking | a process used to solve an equation by undoing what has been done to the variable in the equation. |
subject of the formula | stands alone on the left-hand side of the equality sign. |
pronumeral | another name for Variable |
substitute | putting values where the letters or symbols are |
solution | a value, or values, we can put in place of a variable (such as x) that makes the equation true. |
