| Term | Definition |
| reciprocal | also called the multiplicative inverse; two numbers whose product is 1, n x 1/n = 1 |
| absolute value | the distance the number is from zero on the number line written as lxl = x or l-xl = x, for example |-5| = 5. |
| difference | The result of subtracting one number from another. |
| sum | the total or whole amount; the result of addition |
| metric measurement | a decimal system of measurement based on 10; the most widely used system in the world. |
| rate | a comparison by division of two quantities that have different units, for example, births per year, cost per person, words per minute |
| ratio | a multiplicative comparison of two quantities expressed with the same units. |
| scale factor | a ratio between two sets of measurements; the ratio of the length in a drawing (or model) to the length on the real thing |
| unit rate | a rate in which the second quantity is one unit. When the first quantity in a unit rate is an amount of money, the unit rate is sometimes called a unit price or unit cost. |
| customary measurement | also be called US Standard units, US Standard system, Imperial or English system or just US units, such as inches, feet, yards, ounces, pounds, cups, etc. |
| minuend | The first number in a subtraction. The number from which another number (the Subtrahend) is to be subtracted. |
| subtrahend | The number that is to be subtracted. The second number in a subtraction. |
| addend | Any of the numbers that are added together. |
