| Term | Definition |
| Overtones | Frequencies which are multiples of a certain frequency. First overtone is 2f. |
| Harmonics | Frequencies which are multiples of a certain frequency. First harmonic is f, which is the fundamental frequency |
| Loudness | Depends on the amplitude of the sound wave. |
| Pitch | Depends on the frequency of the sound wave. |
| Quality | Depends on the number of overtones present and the relative strength of the different overtones. |
| Frequency Limits of Audibility | These are the highest and lowest frequencies that can be heard by a normal human ear. The range is 20 Hz - 20, 000 Hz. |
| Resonance | The transfer of energy between bodies with the same fundamental frequency. |
| Sound Intensity | The rate at which sound energy is passing through unit area at right angles to the direction in which the sound is travelling. i.e. Power/Area. |
| Threshold of Hearing | The smallest sound intensity detectable by the average human ear at a frequency of 1 kHz is 1 x 10^-12 W/m^2. |
| Fundamental Frequency of a String | The frequency that a string vibrates with only an antinode at its centre and two nodes at each end. |
