| cacophony | harsh combination of words |
| caesura | an intenitonal pause in the middle of a line of poetry |
| couplet | 2-line stanza, usually rhyming |
| diciton | use of words in a work |
| didactic poem | poem w/ a lesson/moral to it |
| extended metaphor | comparison carried on throughout the entire poem |
| dramatic poem | a poem w/ dramatic elements |
| euphony | opposite of cacophony; pleasant-sounding words |
| eye rhyme | words that look like they would rhyme but don't (ex.: dove and move) |
| heroic couplet | 2 end-stopped iambic pentameter lines that rhyme |
| hyperbole | an extreme axaggeration |
| imagery | sensory details in a work |
| irony | contrast b/t actual meaning + suggestion of another meaning |
| metaphor | figurative language used to create a comparison w/out the words "like" or "as" |
| onomatopoeia | words whose sounds suggest their meaning (ex.: "moo") |
| oxymoron | pair of contradicting words combined in a single expression |
| personification | giving human char. to inanimate objects |
| poetic foot | usually made up of 2 (sometimes 3) syllables in a combination of soft + harsh sounds |
| refrain | group of repeated words in a poem |
| satire | comedy w/ a political aggenda |
| simile | figurative language w/ use of "like" or 'as" |
| sonnet | 14-line iambic pentameter poem |
