| Computer System | The computer and other support devices (peripheral devices) that work as a tem to (1)receive information as the user inputs it, (2) process that information per the directions that the user defines, (3) output the information in a usable format. |
| Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) | The sector of the CPU that performs the mathematical calculations that are required in many data processing programs. |
| Memory Unit | Allows storage of information. |
| Random Access Memory (RAM) | Temporary Memory that is designed to hold new data and is available only while the computer is turned on. |
| Read-Only Memory (ROM) | Permanent internal memory inside the system, is inaccessible by the user, and is used to store the instructions that are installed or programmed at the manufacturer. |
| Processor Speed | Conveys how fast data can be moved in and out of the memory. Measured in megahertz or gigahertz. |
| Cache | Provides a temporary storage area that provides a quick access to information. |
| Peripheral Devices | Used to (1) input the information, (2) output the information into a form that is easily raed by the user, or (3) store the information for later use. |
| Input Devices | Allow the input of data into the computer. Examples: keyboards, mice, scanners, Web cameras, etc. |
| Optical Character Recognition (OCR) | Used to convert text via scanner. |
| Sound Card | Allows the input of sound into the computer. |
| Classroom Response System (Clicker) | A handheld device that resembles a TV remote that allows students to respond to questions posed by the instructor. |
| Resolution | The clarity of the image that is seen on the computer screen. |
| Pixel | A single colored square on the screen. |
| Dots Per Inch (DPI) | Measures the resolution of printers. |
