Chapter 7 Vocab YD

Miller Levine Chapter 7 Cells Vocabulary

TermDefinition
cell theory All living things are made of cells, cells are the basic structure of living things, cells only come from other cells.
prokaryotes Cells that have genetic material NOT contained in the nucleus.
eukaryotes Cells that have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
organelles structures inside the cell that act as specialized organs
nuclear envelope surrounds the nucleus, regulates what enters and leaves
chromatin DNA bound to protein and contained in the nucleus
ribosomes organelle that makes protiens
endoplasmic reticulum the "assembly line" of the cell for lipids and proteins
nucleus Cell organelle that contains DNA, Control center of cell
Golgi Apparatus Organelle that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins for shipping out of the cell
Lysosome Cell organelle filled with enzymes, the "Cleaner" of the cell.
Cell membrane Flexible barrier around the cell that is selectively permeable.
Cell Wall Strong supporting layer surrounding plant, algae, and some bacterial cells.
Centriole Tiny structures involved with moving chromosomes during cell reproduction
chlorophyll principle pigment of plant used to capture light energy
chloroplast Cell organelle that captures light energy and converts it into sugars through the process of photosynthesis
chromatid one of 2 identical sister parts of a duplicated chromosome
cilia short hairlike projections, usually numerous, that produce movement in cells
chromosome thread-like structure composed of DNA, found within the nucleus of cells
cytoplasm material inside of a cell in which the organelles "float"
diffusion movement of molecules of high concentration to low concentration
flagella whip-like structure that allows cells to move
mitochondira powerhouse of the cell
nucleolus small, dense region inside the nucleus....makes ribosomes
osmosis diffusion of water
passive transport diffusion of molecules across a membrane without the use of energy
active transport process that requires energy to move molecules across cell membranes
unicellular single celled organism
vacuole cell organelle that stores water and other substances

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
