TermDefinition
meter SI unit for length (from the floor to the doorknob)
Celsius temperature scale in which 0 represents the freezing point of water
International System of Measurements (SI) internationally (all nations in the world) accepted system of measurement. Known as the Metric system. Always used in SCIENCE.
Deca or Deka prefix meaning 10. Decameter = 10 meters (Ex. length of semi-trailer) Decaliter = 10 liters Decagram = 10 grams
length describes how long something is. (width, height, breadth, span, depth)
milli prefix meaning .001 1/1000 of a meter
liter base unit for volume (Ex. 1/2 of a 2 liter soft drink)
kilo- prefix meaning 1000 kilometer = 1000 meters Ex. distance around GIS campus kiloliter = 1000 liters Ex. a firetruck carries 2 kiloliters of water kilogram = 1000 grams Ex. a dictionary or baseball bat
gram SI base unit for mass (Ex. a paperclip is 1 gram)
centi - prefix meaning .01 1/100 of a meter (Ex. about the width of a fingernail)
distance describes how far away or near one object is to another
deci - prefix meaning .10 1/10 of a meter (Ex. the width of a clip on clipboard)
hecto - prefix meaning 100 hectometer = 100 meters (Ex. a regulation soccer field) hectoliter = 100 liters (Used to measure grain) hectogram = 100 grams
