Moh's Hardness Scale | a scale developed by German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs to compare the hardness of different minerals. |
mineral | an organic solid with a definite chemical makeup, hardness, luster, density, and streak. |
metallic | very shiny luster, like processed metals, highly reflective, opaque minerals. |
density | the mass per unit of volume of a substance. M/V = D Mass divided by volume equals density |
adamantine | a brilliant luster such as that of a diamond gem like |
hardness | the resistance of a mineral to being scratched (determined by Moh's Scale). Talc has a hardness of 1 and a diamond has a hardness of 10. |
luster | the way a mineral reflects (shines) or absorbs (dull) light as its surface. ex: adamantine, pearly, vitreous, metallic |
