Term | Definition |

peasant | vassal to knights, nobles, and monarchs. Could be divided into serfs and freeman |
hierarchy | a system in a society in which there are classes of people with the majority of people at the bottom having little or no power, and the very few or one at the top having the most power. |
noble | was given land by the king. The nobility was expected to pay taxes to the the king and provide soldiers when needed. |
fief | land given to (loaned) to nobles and knights in exchange for loyality, taxes, and protection by a monarch. |
freeman | a peasant that was not bound to the land during the Middle Ages. he rented land from the Monarch in exchange for giving the monarch a portion of what was produced. |
monarch | the head of the kingdom, such as a king, queen, or emperor |
serf | an unfree person that is bound to the land. If a knight, noble, or monarch sold the land the serfs belonged to the new landlord. |
feudalism | the social system in medieval Europe, in which the nobility held lands from the king in exchange for military service, these vassals were in turn tenants of the king, while the peasants (serfs) had to live on the lord's land and give labor and produce. |
vassal | a person or country in the position of a servant to someone (or country) that rules over them. (May rent land on the condition of loyalty and labor) |
knight | a horse mounted soldier during the Middle Ages. Most were sons of nobles. They were given land by the nobles in exchange for their services |
lord | anyone during the middle ages who was ¨over¨ someone |
