Give three different uses of components. | Construction (e.g.threads), add strength (e.g. interfacing), embellish and decorate, insulate (e.g.wadding), add shape (e.g.shoulder pads), fastenings. |
Give some examples of components that can be used to embellish a textile product. | Beads, buttons, lace, ribbons, |
What is interfacing used for? | Add strength, stabilise, make fabric more rigid, give shape and structure. |
Where are you likely to find interfacings used on clothes? | Collars, cuffs, pockets, behind machine embroidery. |
What is boning used for? | To add rigidity and structure to things like strapless corsets and dresses. |
What is wadding used for? | This is used to add extra insulation when quilting. |
Name some different sorts of fastenings. | Zips, buttons, velcro, press studs, hooks and eyes, eyelets. |
Give two advantages and two disadvantages of zips. | Secure, easy to attach, hard wearing, washable, coloured. BUT snag delicate fabrics, not usually decorative and are hard to replace. |
Give an advantage and a disadvantage of buttons. | easy to replace, colourful and decorative.....but...not very strong, can be a choking hazard for small children. |
What can velcro be used for? | Velcro is safe, machine washable and hard wearing and so is really good for children's clothes. |
