ICT in Textiles

QuestionAnswer
Give two advantages of using computers in manufacture. Increased efficiency, reduced costs (don't have to pay as many wages), better working conditions, safer for workers, faster.
Name two ways that computers are used to design and present in the Textiles industry. Making mood boards, artwork, colouring images rather than drawing, designing, sampling, digital photography.
Name some programmes used in fabric design. Photoshop, Illustrator
What are virtual prototypes? These are 3d models of a design....generated by a computer. They help the designer to see if their design 'works'.
How are computers used in designing and sampling? Computers can be used to pass information quickly to machinery to make samples. Woven or knitted fabrics can easily be designed onscreen. Embroidery motifs can be designed onscreen and then stitched.
How can computers be used in pattern (template) design? Pattern design, grading (making different sizes of pattern) and pattern making can be computer aided.
What is a lay plan and why is this best done on a computer? A lay plan is a diagram showing how to lay out pattern pieces on fabric. A computer can work out the best way to put all the pieces close together and this wastes less fabric when the pieces are cut out.
Explain how digital printing can reduce costs for a designer. Smaller samples of a print design can be printed more cheaply on a digital printer. Designs can be changed easily when printing digitally.
How are fabric pieces cut out in industry and what are the advantages of this? Fabric pieces are cut out using a large industrial machine. It is much more accurate and can cut through lots of layers of fabric at once - reducing costs.
What are the advantages of computerised knitting machines? Seamless knitting. Faster than by hand, designs can be quickly altered on a computer and then made.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of computerised weaving machines? Faster, easier to set up and change designs. Hand weaving has a more exclusive bespoke feel to it.
What is a fabric spreading machine? This is a machine that automatically spreads out layers of fabric before cutting out. This would take a long time to do by hand.
How can computers be used in industry when planning production? Stock control, monitoring of quality, planning and scheduling of production.
