Matter

TermDefinition
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass the measure of the amount of matter something has
Volume the amount of space that matter takes up
Density the amount of matter in a given space; how heavy or light something is for its size
Property something that describes matter
Physical Properties characteristics that can only be seen or measured without changing the material
Chemical Properties characteristics that can only be seen when the material changes and new materials are formed
States of Matter three forms: solid, liquid, gas
Evaporation the change of state from a liquid to a gas
Melting the change of state from solid to a liquid
Condensation the change of state from gas to a liquid
Freezing the change of state from liquid to a solid
Physical Change the change in the size, shape, or state of matter with no new matter being formed
Mixture matter made up of two or more different substances
Solution a mixture in which properties of different substances are mixed evenly throughout
Chemical Change the change in matter that results in one or more different kinds of matter forming
Solubility the amount of substance that can be dissolved in another substance
Balance Scale a tool used to measure mass
Graduated Cylinder a tool used to measure the volume of liquids
