The Principles of Design

1. What are the elements of design? Color harmony, lines(vertical, horizontal, diagnol,Curved), shape/form, space, texture, color
2. What are the principles of design? Balance, Rhythm,Proportion/Scale, Emphasis,Unity
3. What is the principle repetition? A design that is copied or repeated
4. How does texture affect color? Smooth surfaces reflect more light than rough surfaces Rough surfaces absorb more light
5. What do curved lines suggest? Suggests a soft, graceful effect to desins (too many will make a design busy)
6. What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? A horizontal balance are equal parts that go up and down, Horizontal balance are eqaul parts but go left to righ and Radial balnces are elements that radiate out from design
7. What do diagonal lines suggest? Suggests action, movment and excitment
8. What is space? The area provided for a paticular purpose (on floor is 2 demensional, A room or dwelling is 3 demensional)
9. What are the four types of rhythm? Gradation, Radiation, Repetition, Continuous
10. What is asymmetrical balance? Example? Parts of a design that are not identical but are equal in visual wieght
11. What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? Horizontal lines draw your attention side to side, and vertical lines draw your attention upward
12. What is the golden mean? a ratio
13. What is the difference between shape and form? a shape is a flat or silhoutte image as to where form is the outlines edged of a 3D object
14. What are the five types of balance? Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, Vertical, Horizontal, Radial
15. What does unity or harmony mean? It's all the elementant and principles of design that work together to creat harmony
16. What are the two things texture involves? Involves how the surface feels to the touch and how it appears to feel
17. What are the four types of line? Horizontal, vertical, diagnal, curved
18. What is proportion? Means each of the parts are right sizeto belong to the whole
19. Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? Diagnoal
20. What is symmetrical balance? Example? It's when parts of a design are equal distributed. This can be physically or visually wieghed, and both parts are equal
21. What is emphasis? What is another name for it? It's one object or item that stands out, also called a focal point
22. What happens when you use a continuous line? It creates a continuous line for eyes to follow
23. What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal Balance
24. What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal Balance
25. What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation increases or decreases in size, and has one element of design that changes and radiation are just lines or designs that move out from a center point

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
