cite to quote as evidence When you cite evidence from the text, you must remember to use quotation marks.
compromise the settlement of a dispute by each party giving up some demands In order to settle the dispute in our group, each member had to compromise by giving up at least one idea.
conclude to bring or come to an end Every good essay concludes with a paragraph that reminds the reader of the topic of the essay.
convert to change into a different form or so that it can be used in a different way In math we had to convert our fractions to decimals.
culture the beliefs, customs, practices and social behavior of a nation or people The culture of Americans greatly differ from those of India.
democracy a form of government in which people choose their leader by voting. The people of America voting for president is a true form of democracy.
diversity having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization In New York City there is a great diversity of people since the people come from all over the world.
ecosystems everything that exists in a particular environment Our lesson in Science was all about the many different ecosystems of plants.
evaluate consider or examine something in order to judge its value, quality, or importance Mrs. Mirabile had to evaluate our test based on its content, spelling, and punctuation.
evidence give a sign or proof that something is true When answering the short response question, we had to cite evidence from the text.
examine to look at (something) closely and carefully in order to learn more about Part of being a close reading is to examine the text by reading it more than once.
exponent the number of times the number or expression is to be multiplied by itself Learning about exponents in Math was a lot more difficult than I expected.
expository A type of writing where the purpose is to explain, informs, or even describe Creating an article that explains the 1906 San Francisco earthquake is an example of expository writing.
horizontal parallel to the horizon Lines of latitude are horizontal.
immigration to come into a foreign country to live The immigration of the Irish to America was due to famine in Ireland.
inference to use clues from a story and what you already know to reach a conclusion We had to make an inference about the character based on the challenges he faced and his responses to those challenges.
interpret to explain the meaning of something We had to interpret the meaning of the unfamiliar word using context clues.
narrative a story or an account of a sequence of events in the order in which they happened The narrative given by the speaker was hard to follow because it was told out of sequence.
paraphrase to say something that someone else has said or written using different words, especially in order to make it simpler or shorter Instead of reciting the speech word for word, John paraphrased what was said in order to make it easier to understand.
parenthesis a pair of marks ( ) used to group units in a mathematical expression When solving the math equation, do you solve what’s in the parenthesis first?
perspective a way of thinking about and understanding something, from one person’s point of view The story will change based on who’s perspective it is being told.
political relating to a government or the conduct of government The political foundation of our government is democracy.
precipitation water that falls to the earth as hail, mist, rain, sleet, or snow There is precipitation expected in our area over the next several days.
summarize to give a shortened version of something that has been said or written, using its main points Jack had to summarize what was read in three complete sentences.
vertical going straight up or down Lines of longitude are vertical.
voice the speech and thought patterns of a narrator or author The narrator’s voice set the tone of the novel.
accurate free from mistake or error Your calculations on the math exam were accurate and show your skills as a mathematician.
