Cell Test #2
end of cell unit
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the products of photosynthesis? | oxygen and glucose |
How does photosynthesis benefit heterotrophs? | It creates oxygen to breathe |
What captures energy from sunlight during photosynthesis? | chlorophyll in the chloroplasts |
What are the three parts of the cell theory? | cells are basic unit of structure and function, all living things are made of cells, cells come from other cells |
What is the function of the cell membrane? | to control what goes in and out of the cell |
What is the function of the nucleus? | control center of the cell |
What is the function of the mitochondria? | converts energy from food molecules into energy the cell can use |
Why is water important for cells? | essential organic compound for the body, regulates temperature, gives shape and support to cells, allows reactions to function |
What is osmosis? | diffusion of water molecules through a membrane |
What is the function of a cell wall? | support, protection, gives cell its shape |
What is respiration? | process of breaking down food to release its energy |
What is the function of a vacuole? | stores food and other materials needed by the cell, water, waste, food |
What energy powers photosynthesis? | sunlight |
What are three ways plants are different than animal cells? | plants have cell wall, central vacuole, plastid, chloroplasts, |
Where does photosynthesis take place in a cell? | chloroplast |
Where does cellular respiration take place in a cell? | mitochondria |
Why are respiration and photosynthesis considered opposite processes? | Photosynthesis creates sugar and oxygen. Respiration uses sugar and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. Carbon dioxide and water are the raw materials of photosynthesis. |
What are the raw materials and products of respiration? | Raw materials of respiration are glucose and oxygen. Products of respiration are carbon dioxide, water and energy in the form of ATP. |
How can you tell if a cell is plant or animal? | In a plant, look for cell wall, chloroplasts, central vacuole. In an animal, cell membrane will not have square shape, would have smaller vacuoles, lysosomes |
Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis. | Mitosis creates a duplicate of the cell with the same amount of DNA. Meiosis occurs only in sex cells and decreases the DNA by half. They are both forms of cell division. DNA programs how they divide. |
