Unit 4 -Fractions

4th grade fractions

TermDefinition
Fraction a number that names equal parts of a whole; a fraction names a point on the number line.
numberator the number above the fraction bar in a fraction that tells the number of equal parts that are being described
denominator the number below the fraction bar in a fraction that tells the number of equal parts in the whole
equivalent fractions two or more fractions that name the same part of a while or the same point on a number line
benchmark fraction a common fraction that you might compare other fractions to
common denominator a number that is a common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions
compare to decide if one number is greater than, less than or equal to another number
> a symbol used to compare two number when the first is greater than the second
< a symbol used to compare two numbers with the first is less than the second
unit fraction a fraction with a numerator of 1: other fractions are built from this
mixed number a number with a whole number part and a fractional part
product the result of multiplication
tenths the parts formed with a whole is divided into ten equal parts
hundredths the pars formed when a whole is divided into one hundred equal parts
